Gemini’s self-custodial smart wallet will run on an ERC-7579 smart account with an open ecosystem of modules

TL;DR

  • Gemini launches Gemini Wallet, a self-custodial browser-native smart wallet.
  • Gemini uses Rhinestone's ERC-7579 modular smart account framework, ModuleSDK, and module registry to deliver an extensible, portable, and secure smart wallet for users.

Introduction

On August 15, 2025, Gemini launches Gemini Wallet, a browser-native smart wallet utilizing ERC-7579 as the blueprint for its underlying smart account. The wallet will utilize passkeys and social recovery for self-custodial key management and aims to expand its functionality through a Gemini-managed modular registry, opening up the wallet to a broader library of modules.

Rhinestone has been supporting Gemini in the development of their smart account implementation, modules, and internal SDK. We’re excited to partner with Gemini in the launch of a self-custodial wallet that fully aligns with the ethos of maximising wallet portability, composability, and security.

Why Gemini Chose ERC-7579

ERC-7579 outlines the minimally required interfaces and behavior for smart accounts and modules. The goal is to achieve smart account interoperability with minimal impact on the implementation logic of the account. This allows vendors, such as Gemini, to innovate while enabling a flourishing, multi-account-compatible module ecosystem.

Gemini specifically chose to fork the Nexus, an account that draws heavily on the ERC-7579 reference implementation. This account aligns closely with the ERC-4337 specification, is gas-optimised, and has received multiple audits from top security firms. This allows Gemini to achieve a vendor-neutral, upgrade-safe modular account core for its smart wallet.

In summary, the benefits for ERC-7579 are threefold:

  1. Programmable signature validation that will future-proof Gemini Wallet’s key management solution. The initial setup utilizes passkeys and social recovery; however, in the future, Gemini Wallet could be deployed with a Yubikey or a multi-sig setup.
  2. An extensive open-source ecosystem of smart account implementations and modules to reuse and remix for Gemini’s specific product goals.
  3. Zero vendor lock-in with a clean upgrade process for the smart account core and censorship resistance with ERC-4337 natively supported.

Building an Open Module Ecosystem

Opening up a smart wallet to external modules built by the community may open up an attack vector whereby a user installs a malicious module. To solve this, Gemini is operating a module registry that follows the approach laid out by Rhinestone’s Module Registry and the ERC-7484 spec. This allows Gemini to attest to modules it deems safe for its users to install. When installing a module on the Gemini Wallet, the smart account core will first call the module registry and check that the module is indeed attested to as safe and secure. This lays the foundations for Gemini Wallet to open up the smart account core to be extended with new modules developed by any team.

Conclusion

We’re excited to see Gemini adopting ERC-7579 as the smart account core for the launch of its first self-custodial wallet. The power of ERC-7579 comes from the community that supports it and drives it forward. We look forward to continuing to work with Gemini to make smart accounts extensible, portable, and secure
